The UAE’s cinema sector surged to AED800m ($217.83m) in revenue in 2024, driven by increasing audience engagement and reinforcing the nation’s status as a key player in the global film industry. With 1,262 films screened and 15m tickets sold, UAE cinemas provided an immersive entertainment experience, strengthening public confidence in the country’s dedication to high-quality cinematic productions.

In parallel, the e-gaming industry also witnessed remarkable growth, generating over AED1.5bn ($0.41bn) in revenue in 2024, fueled by rising demand for video games. As part of regulatory efforts to ensure appropriate content for all audiences, 375 video games were reviewed and classified under the UAE’s established age-rating system, aligning with media standards.

Mohammed Saeed Al Shehhi, Secretary-General of the UAE Media Council, highlighted these achievements as a testament to the Council’s commitment to enhancing the competitiveness of the film and gaming industries. He emphasised the importance of regulatory frameworks and a business-friendly environment in fostering growth within the entertainment sector.

According to Al Shehhi, a key driver of the UAE’s cinematic success is the diversity of film content. “UAE cinemas showcase films in more than 20 global languages, reflecting the nation’s cultural diversity and affirming its position as a global destination for the film industry.”

Additionally, the UAE’s strategy of early global film releases has positioned it as a premier destination for moviegoers seeking real-time access to international blockbusters alongside major markets worldwide.

Al Shehhi also reaffirmed the UAE Media Council’s dedication to content regulation, ensuring films and video games are classified appropriately to cater to different age groups. This initiative allows families to make informed entertainment choices while fostering trust in the quality of cinematic and gaming experiences available in the country.

He further emphasised that the UAE’s integrated services, advanced infrastructure and investor-friendly policies have cemented its reputation as a major media hub. The nation’s streamlined procedures and flexible regulatory systems have facilitated investments in both the film and gaming industries.
